| Abstract: | A spinach leaf piece was planed into 10 layers parallel withleaf surface. The biochemical and ultrastructural propertiesof the chloroplasts of these 10 layers were compared. Resultsshowed that both the biochemical and ultrastructural propertiesof the chloroplasts change gradually and continuously from sun-to shade-type with the depth from the adaxial surface. 2 Present address: Department of Biology, College of Arts andSciences, University of Tokyo, Komaba, Meguroku, Tokyo 153 Japan.
