Abstract:A family of related retroelements was characterized in the genomes of some Graminease species. The structure of these retroelements indicates that they are retrotransposons containing reading frames with sequence similarity to the polyproteins of copia and Ty. This family of retroelements (termed WIS-2) occurs in the genomes of barley, wheat, rye, oats, and Aegilops species. Ongoing genomic variation both within individual plants of a wheat variety and within and between varieties of wheat is associated with some members of the WIS-2 family.
