Abstract:
Extracellular formation of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) by Rhodovulum sp. PS88 correlated with the consumption of the undissociated form of levulinic acid (LA) in an intact cell system. The concentration of the undissociated form of LA governed the extracellular formation of ALA at various culture pH values. This phenomenon might be caused by inhibition of ALA dehydratase by the undissociated form of LA after uptake into the cells as observed in Rhodobacter sphaeroides.
