Abstract:
Addition of nifurtimox (a nitrofuran derivative) to Trypanosoma cruzi culture (epimastigote) forms induced an increase in the respiratory rate and the release of H2O2 from the whole cells to the suspending medium. Growth-inhibiting concentrations of nifurtimox were able to stimulate O2? production by the T. cruzi mitochondrial fraction supplemented with NADH (or succinate), and also to enhance the generation of O2? by the microsomal fraction with NADPH as reductant.
