Abstract: | A study has been made of the inhibitory effect of DOC on the in vitro incorporation of glycine-1-C14 into reticulocyte proteins. The inhibition is apparent at the shortest incubation period used and remains quantitatively the same over 4 hr. Preincubation with DOC has no effect until a 2-hr, preincubation period is reached. The percentage of inhibition remains constant in a preparation progressively losing the capacity to incorporate glycine-C14. DOC has no influence on the permeability of the cells to glycine or potassium, nor does it exert its effect by increasing the breakdown of protein. The inhibition appears to be of a noncompetitive type. DOC does inhibit the oxygen consumption of reticulocyte preparations, but not to a degree sufficient to account for its inhibition of glycine-C14 incorporation. |
