Abstract: | It has been shown that the development of generalized epileptic activity in rats led to the decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity without affecting glutathione peroxidase (GP) and glutathione reductase (GR) activity. Long-term examination of 13 patients suffering from generalized forms of epilepsy has shown an about 30% decrease in SOD and GP activity in red blood cells. It is assumed that the functional insufficiency of the antioxidative system plays an essential role in the development of lipid peroxidation disturbances during epilepsy. |
