Abstract:This paper reports on an investigation into the lower Forth estuary where a combination of hydrody namic, dye and salinity measurement techniques have been employed to quantify the effects of temporally varying vertical and transverse density gradients on the diffusion and dispersion processes. It is concluded that the interaction of velocity shear and weak longitudinal salinity induced density gradient produces a complex and profound effect on estuarine solute mixing processes.
