Abstract:Different methods of extracting lipid from cells gave varying results for the lipid content of the cells but did give more consistent values for the fatty acid content. This latter parameter is therefore recommended as a better assessment of the fat-producing ability of the cell. Although it is essential to hydrolyze cells with acid to release all the fatty acids this does not alter the relative percentages of the fatty acids. There is no need to carry out any of the processes in an inert atmosphere.
