Abstract: | A previously undescribed shell disease of unknown cause, of the American blue crab, Callinectes sapidus, was investigated morphologically, histologically, and bacteriologically. The disease manifested itself by a superficial necrosis of the exoskeleton that progressed from sparsely localized spots into widely necrotized areas. Skeletal tissue was digested and broken. Chitinoclastic bacteria were associated with the syndrome, but no causative relationship was established. |
