Abstract:A new method for the production of multinucleate plant cells in meristematic populations is described. This method involves the aneuploidy induction of nuclei of a same cell. Allium cepa root tips were chemically treated, and the multinucleate cells obtained were scored at interphase and mitosis. When meristematic cells are treated with γ-hexachlorocyclohexane in appropriate culture conditions, the anaphase chromatids are distributed into discrete unbalanced groups. This phenomenon has been profited for inducing viable multinucleate cells with aneuploid nuclei after cytokinesis inhibition with caffeine.
