Abstract:4-Amino-5-hexynoic acid, a suicide inactivator of the mammalian pyridoxal phosphate-dependent 4-aminobutyric acid:2-oxoglutaric acid aminotransferase, inhibits phytochrome and chlorophyll synthesis in developing oat (Avena sativa L.), corn (Zea mays L.), pea (Pisum sativum L.), and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seedlings. In Avena and Cucumis seedlings, respectively, inhibition of phytochrome and chlorophyll accumulation by 4-amino-5-hexynoic acid can be significantly reversed by application of 5-aminolevulinic acid. These results indicate that 4-amino-5-hexynoic acid inhibits the synthesis of 5-aminolevulinic acid in plants.
