Abstract:Observations of chitin preparations from hyphae ofCandida albicans suggest that the septum is made of two juxtaposed plates rich in chitin microfibrils. Thus the trilaminate appearance of sections of septa seen in electron micrographs can be interpreted as two plates of densely staining chitin-rich material separated by a lightly staining area. This model may be applicable to septa of other fungi.
