Abstract:The content of endogenous zearalenone in tissue cultured embryos or seedlings of certain winter plants (Triticum aestivum L. (Yan a 1817), Brassica chinensis L. (Wu Yueman) and Orychophragmus violaceus (L,) O. E. Schulz was studied by using a specific inhibitor-malathion and ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) under low temperature vernalization. The content of zearalenone in all tested plants synchronously increased with the depth of vernalization in the initial stage before reaching a maximum amount and decreased in later stage after reaching a maximum amount. The appearance of the zearalenone peak might be the signal of the end of vernalization. Malathion inhibited the formation of zearalenone, but had no other side-effects on normal vegetative growth. Zearalenone was first produced in seedling root and then increased markedly in the shoot apex of B. chinensis. These results indicated that zearalenone might be produced endogenously in higher plants and was closely related to vernalization. It was suggested that zearalenone might be oneof the key substances in winter plants during vernalization. This is the first report about the inhibition of the formation of zearalenone in higher plants by malathion.
