Abstract: | Abstract The cells of marine and halotolerant eukaryotic algae can achieve osmotic balance by ion accumulation mechanisms or by the synthesis and degradation of compatible solutes. The latter mechanism has been extensively studied in Dunaliella tertiolecta , in which the compatible solute glycerol is synthesised and metabolised through the glycerol cycle. Osmoregulation in Poterioochromonas malhamensis by isofloridoside as the compatible solute has a different control mechanism. The results obtained with unicellular algae might lead to strategies for the improvement of salt and water stress resistance in crop plants. |
