| Abstract: | Measurements with pH-sensitive microelectrodes have recently shown that the hydrogen ion appears to be in equilibrium in superficial but not in deep muscle fibres. These results are analysed in the present paper and it is concluded that the apparent equilibrium distribution of the hydrogen ion in superficial fibres is real and that the apparent non-equilibrium value of intracellular pH obtained for deeper fibres may possibly be caused by cell damage. |
