Sensitivity of the sodium efflux in barnacle muscle fibers to the microinjection of monensin

Abstract:	Sodium efflux in barnacle muscle fibers is stimulated by internal application of monensin. Pretreatment of fibers with ouabain leads to marked enhancement of the response of the Na efflux to monensin. This response though independent of the Ca²⁺ gradient can be augmented by protonation of a bathing medium free of HCO₃^?.
