Abstract:Biotechnology must be wide exploited in the production of traditional medicinal plants because of the progressive exhaustion of wild resources and the unstable guality of artificial cultispecies. Progresses and potentials of culture of plant cells and hairy roots,and genetic engineering applied in the production of traditinal drugs are reviewed. large scale production of some medicinal plant cells and hairy roots such as gingseng is realized via the selection of high yielding cell line,the optimization of culture condition and the design of approciate fermentor. The content of some secondary metabolites such as scopolamine is increased via genetic engineering of key enzyme. In particule,the production of some proteins derived from bacteria,animal and human via the transgenic plants as a bioreactor is researched. Finally,some results obtained in our laboratory is also concerned.
