Abstract: | The reproductive biology of Grayia brandegei was examined. Although monoecious, Grayia brandegei exhibits a phenotypic dimorphism of protogynous and protandrous mating types known as heterodichogamy. For individual plants, the temporal separation of staminate and pistillate flowering phases appears to be complete. No self-fertilization is possible in protandrous plants, but may be possible in protogynous plants provided pistillate flowers remain unfertilized. Flowering phases of protogynous and protandrous mating types are synchronized and reciprocal, ensuring cross-fertilization between mating types. Less than 15% overlap of sexual functions occurred between plants of the same mating type. Protogynous and protandrous plants were randomly dispersed in the environment and in relation to each other. Mating type frequencies did not differ significantly from 1:1. We discuss the possibility of a heterodichogamous pathway to dioecy. |
