Lactic acid production by aggregated continuous cultures of Lactobacillus acidophilus under aerobic conditions

Abstract:Summary The ability of Lactobacillus acidophilus to aggregate, to produce lactic acid for a long term continuous fermentation process and to exist as aggregate cell cultures in a gas-lift reactor under aerobic conditions was studied. The main product of fermentation was lactic acid and only the traces of other end-products were determined. The highest fermentation efficiency of lactic acid was 98.6% and the highest productivity was 9.6 g.l–1.h–1 of lactic acid.
