The cell equator - more than poles apart

Abstract:Cytokinesis is the last ritual of a dividing cell. Determining the position and horizon of the cell furrow is important for equal distribution of cytoplasmic content between the two daughter cells. The traditional view promotes a classical sequence of bipolar spindle formation followed by cytokinesis. However, a new understanding has recently emerged that uncouples these events. The cell-furrow formation seems to ignore spindle polarity and is instead dependent on the stability and dynamics of cortical microtubules.
