Abstract: | Species of the genus Machaerium characteristically produce aromatic compounds, being the isoflavonoids (isoflavanes and isoflavones), flavones, neoflavonoids, stilbenes and pterocarpans their potential chemophenetic markers. In this study, sixteen compounds were characterized from the acetone extract of Machaerium isadelphum leaves and branches: two isoflavones, six pterocarpans, one flavanone, three sterols and four triterpenes. Seven of these compounds have been previously isolated from other Machaerium species with which M. isadelphum shares the biosynthetic pathways that produce them. In addition, nine of the compounds were isolated for the first time within this genus. It is important to emphasize that their structures are completely consistent with the phytochemistry previously established for Machaerium. Medicarpin, 4-hydroxymedicarpin, 6α-hydroxymedicarpin, mucronucarpan, variabilin, 4-hydroxymaackiain, alfalone and formononetin are considered chemophenetic markers for M. isadelphum. |
