Abstract:The aromatic polyene antibiotic levorin A2 forms ion channels permeable to monovalent cations, in lipid membranes containing cholesterol or ergosterol. Channel conductivity is in the range 0.3–0.5 pS. The channel has two main states: conducting (open) and nonconducting (closed). The potential-dependent formation of levorin A2 channels is observed in lipid membranes. The system responsible for the ion-channel selectivity is localized on the hydrophilic side of the lactone ring of the polyene molecule.
