Abstract:We studied the diversity of the polymorphic 195-kDa antigen (p190) of Plasmodium from infected individuals. Genomic parasite DNA was extracted from the blood of 30 donors from different endemic areas of Brazil. The 5' region, encoding the polymorphic N-terminal part of p190 was analysed following polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Multiple infections of genetically distinct parasites could be detected within infected malaria patients. Sequence analysis and oligodeoxyribonucleotide typing of the PCR products demonstrated the prevalence of a third polymorphic form of p190.
