Abstract:The proteins of the erythrocyte membrane from sickle cell anemia patients displaying varying degrees of severity of illness have been studied. Analyses of the conformation of the proteins in the membrane by circular dichroism and of the membrane polypeptide components by detergent-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis indicate differences which correlate directly with the documented severities of the diseased states of the sickle cell patients. Observed differences include a decrease in ordered secondary structure and an apparent absence of some polypeptide chains in the severely ill sickle cell cases when compared to the normal erythrocyte.
