Abstract: | The occurrence of silicon in mature fronds of Pteridium aquilinumwas investigated using light and scanning electron microscopyand X-ray micro analysis. The heaviest deposits were locatedin the outer tangential walls of the epidermis of the petiole, but the upper epidermal cells of the costal regions of the laminaealso accumulated small quantities. No discrete bodies were associatedwith these deposits. However, the mid-ribs of the laminae exhibitedsome long siliceous fibres associated with the luminae of thestrengthening tissues. The significance of these accumulationsin relation to deposition mechanisms and possible carcinogeniceffects are discussed. Pteridium aquilinum L., bracken, frond, microanalysis, silica |
