Properties of a bacteriocin-like substance produced byStreptomyces virginiae

Streptomyces virginiae produces both spontaneously and after irradiation a substance of polypeptide nature which kills streptomycetes without lysis. In its increased synthesis after U.V.-irradiation, its narrow spectrum of action restricted to the streptomycetes, and its specific adsorption on living sensitive cells, this inhibitor resembles the bacteriocins.
