Specialized transduction of the biotin region of Escherichia coli by phage T1.

Summary Phage T1 transduces Bio⁺ by special mechanism which leads to a higher efficiency of Bio⁺ transduction than other bacterial markers. Efficient Bio⁺ transduction depends on a site located between the galactose operon and the bacterial attachment site for phage . Evidence is presented which supports the hypothesis that the site is essential for efficient Bio⁺ transduction because at the site phage T1 initiates head filling in a polar (unidirectional) fashion leading to increased pickup of the Bio⁺ marker.
