Sexual maturity and litter size in short-tailed mole rat Nesokia indica

The breeding pattern of 348 short-tailed mole rats Nesokia indica inhabiting the non-crop areas of the central Punjab (Pakistan) was studied for effective vertebrate pest control. Of 107 males and 241 females trapped, 75 and 179,respectively, were sexually mature. The sex ratio revealed a predominance of females. Body weight and body length were used as indices of age of the trapped specimens of the short-tailed mole rat. The smallest sexually mature male rats were recorded in the body weight class 70 - 89 g and body length class 13.1 - 14.0 cm. The smallest sexually mature females were found in the body weight class 70 - 89 g and the body length class 12.1 - 13.0 cm. The average number of embryos in a litter size was 2.74 ± 0.15 (range, 1 - 5), whereas the average number of placental scars was 4.29 ± 0.19(1 - 11 ). Body weight classes appeared to have significant effect on litter size, whereas body length classes and estimated age had no significant effect on the size of litter.
