Abstract:Reactions of iron(III) complexes with five polyaminocarboxylates and hydrogen peroxide in an alkaline solution were investigated. Iron(III) complexes of which the ring including two nitrogen and iron atoms is five-membered formed a well-known stable side-on peroxo adduct. On the other hand, iron(III) complexes which have a six-membered ring formed a short-lived side-on peroxo adduct and then changed to iron(II) complex and superoxide. Electrochemical measurements showed that the redox potentials of the iron complexes having a six-membered ring are higher than those of the complexes having a five-membered ring. These results indicate that the chelate size is an important factor for tuning the redox potential of the iron center and for the reactivity toward hydrogen peroxide.
