| Abstract: | Alpha satellite is one of the most thoroughly studied repetitive DNA families and is a paradigm for understanding other satellite DNA and multigene families. Alpha satellite illustrates both intra- and interchromosomal modes of evolution. Recent advances in understanding the structure and evolution of human and other primate alpha satellites are summarized in this review. |
