Abstract:Tadpoles of Xenopus laevis were placed in partitioned, clear plastic trays to test their response to the visual presence of conspecifics. Two different developmental stages were used in separate controlled experiments. The results show that both the younger and older tadpoles will form aggregates based solely on the visual presence of other individuals. It was further demonstrated that this behaviour was lost at metamorphosis, since young post-metamorphic individuals do not show a significant tendency to aggregate under the same controlled conditions.
