Abstract:In this review we outline clinical features, presentation and pathogenesis of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), treatment objectives and therapeutic options. We focus on and outline the changing role of the clinical laboratory in diagnosis and treatment of this condition. We also review recent information on the involvement of insulin resistance in the syndrome. We provide some explanation for confusion over the selection of the best hormone measurements for diagnosis. Finally, we outline the best current and future laboratory support for this common condition in young women.
