Abstract: | Support for the idea that physiological gradients of substancesinto the tissue may be the operative factors promoting organinitiation in vitro is presented. Evidence for this conceptwas obtained through measurement of the starch content and respiratoryactivity of upper and lower segments of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacumL. cv. Wisconsin 38) callus and inversion of the tissue duringculture.
