Abstract: | Summary Electron microscopy revealed the presence of the central lacteal in the intestinal villus of the cat. Serum injection was found to distend it. It appeared as a vessel of about 10 to 12 in diameter located in the center of the villus, with a wall consisting of a continuous endothelium and delicate connective-tissue fibrils. The most significant structural difference between lacteal and blood capillary of the villus is thought to be the absence of a basement membrane from the former. The probable biological importance of the fine structure of the central lacteal is discussed. |
