Abstract: | Helgolandinium subglobosum has been isolated in culture from marine plankton obtained near Helgoland. It is described, and drawings as well as photographs and German and Latin diagnoses are presented. Its cell wall is thin. The sutures of tabulation are invisible in living cells. Plates are non-ornamented light-microscopically; the plate formula placesHelgolandinium into the family Pyrophacaceae. The species is motile; its cell division occurs after disintegration and shedding of the skeleton inside a newly formed thin and non-composed cellulose envelope. Both daughter flagellates are liberated after, and by, dissolution of the envelope. |
