Anaerobic digestion of a petrochemical effluent using an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor

Abstract:Summary An UASB reactor was used for the anaerobic conversion of an acidic petrochemical effluent into a methane-rich biogas. Reactor efficiency was optimal at an HRT of 1.78 days and loading rate of 7.255 kg COD/m3.d, A COD reduction of 83% was obtained. The gas production was 2.64 m/m .d (STP) and contained more than 90% CH4. A further increase in the loading rate resulted in a drastic decrease in the reactor effectivity.
