Abstract:Electromorphic variation of seventeen enzyme loci in four populations of a troglobitic coleoptera S. hydrophilus has been studied using polyacrylamide and starch gel electrophoresis. Our examination of geographically proximate populations has provided evidence for substantial local intraspecific differentiation. Three highly polymorphic loci display the highest level of allelic differentiation. The most divergent cave population, Espiougue G.30, presents some rare electrophoretic variants. The observed heterogeneities in the allele frequencies are not necessarily correlated with geographic distance. Several hypotheses are put forward and examined in relation with habitat (S.U.C. and cave) and biology of troglobitic animals. These observations suggest that genic divergences are not the consequence of populations of small size or of selection at the microecological level, but presumably partly correlated with restricted gene flow in relation with structural barriers.
