Abstract:The study was designed to determine whether leucine-enkephalin (L-ENK) was present in the digestive system of the scallop Chlamys farreri. The results indicate that L-ENK was present in the epithelium and connective tissue of mouth labia, labial palps, intestine, rectum, and stomach of the scallop Chlamys farreri. Moreover, it was also found that isolated cells showing L-ENK immunoreactivity were detected between the epithelial cells and the basal lamina in the principal hepatopancreatic ducts, and a few immunoreactive cells and fibers were observed between the hepatopancreatic tubules. Our report constitutes the first characterization of L-ENK in the digestive system of the scallop Chlamys farreri, and demonstrates its origin in simpler animals.
