The distribution of the species of the dinoulagellate Ceratiumare related to the oceanographic conditions observed in January1983 across the eastern North Pacific central gyre, the CaliforniaCurrent and the transition zone between them. A change in dominanceoccurs in the central gyre not accompanied by Concomitant changesin the observed physical or chemical features.Ceratium ‘recognized’the edge of the California Current although it seems unaffectedin its abundance and species structure by a major warm temperatureanomaly.
