Abstract:Until recently, the neural bases underlying recovery of function after damage to the cerebral cortex were largely unknown. Recent results from neuroanatomical and neurophysiological studies in animal models have demonstrated that after cortical damage, long-term and widespread structural and functional alterations take place in the spared cortical tissue. These presumably adaptive changes may play an important role in functional recovery.
