Abstract: | In the treatment of advanced cancer of the hypopharynx, preoperative radiation therapy has proven to be of value for the prevention of recurrences in the operative area following radical neck dissection for cancer of the head and neck. Also it has been of value in the planned combined therapy of certain patients with lung, bladder, breast, esophagus, bone, endometrial and rectal cancers.Preoperative radiation therapy should be advantageous in patients who have malignant disease where the possibility exists for the cancer cells to be disseminated during the surgical procedure. |
