Abstract: | A two-stage process for enhanced ajmalicine production in elicited Catharanthus roseus cell cultures was developed in shake-flasks and a bioreactor. By using combined elicitor treatment of an Aspergillum niger mycelium and tetramethyl ammonium bromide, yields of ajmalicine were 48 mg l–1, 52 mg l–1 and 33 mg l–1, respectively in 500-ml flasks, 1000-ml flasks and a 20-l airlift bioreactor. The peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activities decreased in elicited cell cultures but catalase and lipoxygenase activities increased in these cultures. The combined elicitor treatment also caused a significant increase of malondialdehyde content in cell cultures. |
