Abstract: | Analysis of the oligonucleotide composition of the complete E. coli genome and its σ70-specific promoters shows that promoter DNA mainly contains AT-rich hexanucleotides that have functionally important physical properties (propensity to form ‘low-melting’ regions and helix bends). Comparative analysis of the electrostatic characteristics reveals that hexanucleotides corresponding to more electronegative surroundings are mostly found in promoter DNA. |
