Abstract:A consistent, if not invariant, feature of cancer cells is the acquired ability to evade apoptosis. The pioneering work of Dr. Stan Korsmeyer was invaluable in characterizing the molecular foundations of cell death signaling mechanisms during normal development and during multistep carcinogenesis. This foundation now forms the basis for the rational design of therapeutic strategies to selectively activate cell death in cancer cell populations. These strategies are currently being evaluated in an increasing number of clinical trials targeting diverse tumor types.
