Abstract: | Prolyl hydroxylase activity appears at the blastula stage of development in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus and increases over 7-fold by the prism larva stage. The enzyme requires ascorbate, ferrous ions, and α-ketoglutarate for maximum activity and is inhibited by α,α′-dipyridyl. The significance of prolyl hydroxylase activity in embryonic collagen metabolism and morphogenesis is discussed. |
