Abstract: | Summary The production of L-asparaginase was investigated in Escherichia coli, growing under different conditions of aeration in a medium containing 2% or 6% corn steep. At both concentrations, excessive aeration decreased enzyme production. In the medium with 2% corn steep, L-asparaginase activity began to decline as soon as the oxygen absorption exceeded 0.22 mmol O2 l–1 min–1, and when the oxygen absorption rate was 1.26 mmol O2 l–1 min–1, enzyme activity reached only about 5% of maximum. In the medium with 6% corn steep, a decline of L-asperaginase activity did not appear until the oxygen absorption rate value exceeded 0.54 mmol O2 l–1 min–1, at the oxygen absorption rate of 1.26 mmol O2 l–1 min–1, the enzyme activity still reached about 50% of maximum. |
