Abstract:Low pH (5.2) decreased nodule number and acetylene reduction. Aluminium further depressed those parameters in theRhizobium leguminosarum-Pisum sativum associations examined. In the Al-treated plants nodule formation by strains 128C53 and 128C30 was not affected by 3 or 15 and 30 or 60 μM Al, respectively, as compared with the number of nodules on plants grown at pH 5.2 in the absence of Al. However, improved nodulation rates by those strains did not enhance plant dry weight or reduced nitrogen content. No differences in nitrogenase activity were found among strains of nodulating plants grown at the same aluminium level. These results suggest that Al-ions affected specifically nitrogenase activity and that this effect was primarily responsible for the reduction in plant growth.
