Abstract:Glycoprotein gIII of pseudorabies virus is a member of a conserved gene family found in at least seven diverse herpesviruses. We report here that the putative cytoplasmic domain of gIII is not required for transport to the cell surface and, unlike the prototype domain from herpes simplex virus type 1 glycoprotein C, is not required for stable membrane anchoring. Furthermore, this domain does not appear to be essential for incorporation of the glycoprotein into virions.
