Abstract:The properties of phosphofructokinase (PFK) were compared in six human tissues by means of chromatography on DEAE-cellulose and precipitation by antiserum to muscle PFK. At least four isoenzymes appear to exist: muscle PFK, which is probably identical to thyroid PFK; erythrocyte PFK; and two isoenzymes in platelets. Still different patterns were found in brain and leukocytes. Hereditary lack of muscle PFK affects the immunologically related erythrocyte isoenzyme, but not the unrelated leukocyte isoenzymes.
