Abstract:I feel very honored to have been selected as the first Bernard B. Brodie Lecturer at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Brodie, with his fertile and questioning mind, has made so very many seminal contributions to our understanding of the function and regulation of neurotransmitters and to our understanding of drug metabolism and the multiple factors that influence drug metabolism that he is considered by many of us to be the father of modern biochemical pharmacology. In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Brodie has trained large numbers of scientists from all over the world, and many of these scientists have become today's leaders in pharmacology and in the related biomedical sciences. I am particularly pleased to be here today because of my very great esteem for Dr. Brodie.
